For the 11th edition of ART021 Shanghai, Unit 17 is proud to present never before seen & recent paintings as well as sculpture by Paris-based Ezra Gray, Montreal-based Nadya Isabella & Los Angeles-based Tristan Unrau.
Two new large scale acrylic on paper paintings will premier at the fair by Ezra Gray, documenting a glowing earth from space in Introductions as well as an eroding, sepia-toned, cityspace set within the atmosphere of autumn in Forever Unimagined.
Nadya Isabella will present work from her Toadetta series, titled Summer Storm, as well as two smaller oil on canvas works, Untitled & Orchid, that render a suited human figure walking amongst a similar landscape to Gray’s latter work mentioned above, as well as a self portrait of the artist, in a mask and puffer jacket, while holding a blooming yellow orchid during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Various painting & sculpture Tristan Unrau will fill the stand, all made in 2021 & shown in the artist’s most recent solo exhibition at the gallery titled False Idols. The two larger paintings display the artist’s technical capacity: Penrose Prayer is an abstract, architectural motif akin to stained glass, alongside a realistic portrait of a young Polish man named Pawel. Five sculptures titled Idols are made from bronze and render small cats in various states of play, sitting atop hand-painted, modular cardboard plinths that can be used as furniture as well.
Ezra Gray
Ezra Gray (b. 1986) lives and works in Paris. He completed his MA in painting from the Royal College of Art (London) and BFA from Concordia University (Montreal). Select solo exhibitions include Maximum Yearn, Unit 17 (2020); Joech God, Emalin, London (2018); Brown Space, Almanac Inn, Turin and Infinitive, Jeffrey Stark, New York City (both 2017). Select two person & group exhibitions include Folly, Emalin Projects, Dunmore Pineapple, Scotland; Honolulu Triennale with Sean Nicholas Savage, Honolulu, Zurich (both 2016) and Rundgang, Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (2014). Nadya Isabella
Nadya Isabella (b. 1995) is an artist born in Jakarta, Indonesia and is currently living in Montreal. Isabella graduated from Emily Carr Universiry of Art + Design. Her painting practice spans a wide range of themes, from animals to pop culture, the fetishization of commodities to the rituals of the everyday. These subjects are often injected with a sense of drama: poorly taken selfies become reminiscent of paparazzi photographs; insects and amphibians become embroiled in fiery romances replete with picture perfect make-up and eyelashes. Recently, Isabella presented solo exhibitions A Toast to this Moment at Libby Leshgold Gallery (2022) & A Swamp Sonata (2021) at dreams comma delta, as well as the group exhibitions homeplace, (London), curated by Kate Wong; Splinter awe !! (2021) & Crocodile Tears (2020) at Unit 17, Vancouver; Honest Cuts (2020) at New Gallery, Calgary; Split Ends, Cuckoo (2019) in Ladysmith BC, and Shadow Tongue (2019) at Duplex, Vancouver.
Tristan Unrau
Tristan Unrau (b. 1989) holds an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Unrau paints in opposition to the idea that an artist must contain a specific style, instead asking the viewer to let each painting stand alone with its own voice. He examines the difference between voice and style while wondering what the conditions for a pictorial practice might be. Unrau is adept in diverse painting techniques referencing a broad range of styles from Romanticism and Realism to Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. His works are often tragicomic and irreverent, celebrating art history while poking fun at it. Unrau sets up dialectical relationships between diverse imagery and encourages the viewer to find a path through the paintings, allowing their own connections to guide interpretation and meaning. While each picture is distinct in its reference and style, they share a common concern with what painting can mean for us today and what it has meant for us in the past.
Unrau was a 2013 resident at the Banff Centre and has held solo exhibitions at 56 Henry, Towards Gallery, and Unit 17; as well as group exhibitions at Kasmin Gallery, FLAG Art Foundation and the Power Plant. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
