F.F.F.F. 

Paul Kajander & Isabelle Pauwels

Unit 17 is pleased to present F.F.F.F. (2023, 2 channel HD animation, 26m15s), the first collaborative installation by Paul Kajander & Isabelle Pauwels.

 

F.F.F.F. marks the final exhibition for Unit 17 at 2954 West 4th Avenue. The gallery will re-open in 2024, initially as a micro cinema, with a solo exhibition by Gabi Dao. Additional programming will take place in Vancouver, Toronto, Turin & Shanghai in the coming months.

 

Paul Kajander’s practice adopts layering and adjacency through compositional, spatial, durational and associative strategies across drawing, installation, sound, video and collaborative activities. In addition to solo projects, he presents work as part of artist duo HaeAhn Paul Kwon Kajander. Previous exhibition contexts include Franz Kaka; Toronto, Trilobite et le Pneu; Montréal, the Small Arms Inspection Building; Mississauga, Forest City Gallery; London, Modern Fuel; Kingston, the New Media Society; Vancouver, the Hammer Museum; Los Angeles, The SFU Audain Gallery; Vancouver, Daniel Faria Gallery; Toronto, the Seoul Museum of Art; Seoul, The Real DMZ Project; Cheorwon-gun, Art Sonje Center; Seoul and the Western Front; Vancouver. He is represented by Franz Kaka in Toronto.

 

Isabelle Pauwels is currently based in Montréal. She received a BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Vancouver) in 2001, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006. In 2009 she was the inaugural winner of the Brink Award, granted to an early-career artist working in Washington, Oregon, or British Columbia. In 2013 she was a finalist for the Sobey Award. Recently her work has been exhibited at Dazibao and the Musée d’art contemporain, Montréal; Unit 17, Vancouver, and at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Centre at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.
